Review: Microsoft Security Essentials, free antivirus

Posted on February 14, 2011
Filed Under EC Market, news, technology | Comments Off

Microsoft has launched a free antivirus program that has now come out in full version. Is it time to replace your antivirus protection against one of Microsoft ? PCOnline have tested the Microsoft Security Essentials – the free tool called!

Microsoft Security Essentials showed up as a beta version a while back, and with the launch test, I drove the early version for a while. I wrote a text about this on my blog . Now it has free anti-virus arrived in the full version and it’s still free . However, it is not yet translated into Swedish, so the version I chose was in English.

Security Essentials, offers one resident antivirus protection . This means that the program is in the background of your system and ensures that no virus infects your computer. You can compare with a virus scanner, as there are plenty of free versions of where the program will only scan your computer for viruses but does not remain and protect.

Free Antivirus

Software is available for Windows XPVista and Windows 7 . The file you download is about 8 MB, and then also needed updates are downloaded but it went very quickly. After installation, you can choose to scan your computer to see if there are any viruses lurking in the files on your hard drives and other storage devices.

The scan took about 30 minutes on my test computer. Then it is a relatively old computer at 3 GHz with 1.5 GB of internal memory and a couple of hard drives totaling about 500 GB. The speed must be assessed as average.

When I test for viruses, there are several details I’m looking at. What I do not test is how effective protection against viruses . This is something that I believe require significantly more resources than most newsrooms have access to. To carry out a fair test of antivirus effectiveness requires much more than simply installing some virus files and then kick off the program.

Why do I like most reviewers and the viewing figures from well-known and credible test centers , such as AV and AV-Test . These, and some others, carrying out very good reviews that provide a good basis to assess how effective the virus protection is.

What I’m looking at is the installationuser interface , how much performance it takes the computer and the General experience of the software. This is what users have proven to be most interested. An antivirus program will work silently and efficiently in the background , without interrupting the user with either dialog boxes or by pulling down the performance of your computer

Western Digital continues to renew its My Book line of external hard drives for desktop. The latest model has two hard drives that can each hold 2 terabytes. With RAID 0 you can get up to 4TB ofstorage on a device.

In late January, we wrote that Western Digital was the first with a 3.5-inch HDD 2 TB . Now it seems the mass production of hard disks up and running, the company has launched its external hard drive Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II with 4 TB storage capacity – that is 4000 GB.

The new unit will pre-formatted for Mac, but it also works under Windows Vista. There are all four connection ports, USB 2.0, eSATA, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800.Mac users can use the bundled Apple Time Machine to back up their data.

On the panel on the front of the device shows how much free space is left. You can choose to configure the device as RAID 0 and thus get the two hard disks that act as a single unit, which offers a storage capacity of 4 TB. In this case the shared data on disks, giving you better performance in terms of speed. Should a disk fail, however, lost any information, so it’s not particularly safe solution. The alternative is to run them as two entities, or mirror them with RAID 1.

The price of Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II is 7750 dollars.

So you get better range on your wireless network

Posted on February 6, 2011

Wireless networks have become very popular with both home users and businesses. One of the bottlenecks is scope, however, that you can improve with such Sitecom Wireless Range Extender .

Sitecom Wireless Range Extender 300N (product code WL-330 ) is a small device that looks like a regular wireless WiFi router. The difference, when you look at it, is that there is only one network socket for Ethernet connection.

Wireless Range Extender can work in two ways. First, it can be used to improve the range of your existing wireless network. Say you have a problem getting a good connection when you sit upstairs. Then you can install a Wireless Range Extender somewhere in the middle and thus expand your wireless network. In this mode the device acts as an amplifier that makes your WiFi network larger.

The other way you can use the Sitecom Wireless Range Extender at 300N, is to get a wired network device to become wireless. Do you have a network hard drive that only has Ethernet connection to your LAN, but lacks WiFi, so you can relax Sitecom device to disk, thereby making it wireless. This also works for video game systems that do not have WiFi, but has Ethernet.

Sitecom WL-300 is compatible with the network of 802.11b / g, and the new 802.11n Draft 2.0. The unit costs about 920 dollars and included in Sitecom’s product line Pure E-motion. We have not tested it yet, so how well it works in practice we do not know.
